“If you want to awaken all of humanity,
then awaken all of yourself,
if you want to eliminate the suffering in the world,
then eliminate all that is negative in yourself.
Truly, the greatest gift you have to give is that
of your own self-transformation.”

— Lao Tzu

“Through my love for you,
I want to express my love for the whole cosmos,
the whole of humanity, and all beings.
By living with you,
I want to learn to love everyone and all species.
If I succeed in loving you,
I will be able to love everyone and
all species on Earth… This is the real message of love.”

and let your mind be free.
Stay centered by accepting
whatever you are doing.
This is the ultimate.”

Call Me by My True Names by Thich Nhat Hanh

Do not say that I’ll depart tomorrow
because even today I still arrive.

Look deeply: I arrive in every second
to be a bud on a spring branch,
to be a tiny bird, with wings still fragile,
learning to sing in my new nest,
to be a caterpillar in the heart of a flower,
to be a jewel hiding itself in a stone.

I still arrive, in order to laugh and to cry,
in order to fear and to hope.
The rhythm of my heart is the birth and
death of all that are alive.

I am the mayfly metamorphosing on the surface of the river,
and I am the bird which, when spring comes, arrives in time
to eat the mayfly.

I am the frog swimming happily in the clear pond,
and I am also the grass-snake who, approaching in silence,
feeds itself on the frog.

I am the child in Uganda, all skin and bones,
my legs as thin as bamboo sticks,
and I am the arms merchant, selling deadly weapons to
Uganda.

I am the twelve-year-old girl, refugee on a small boat,
who throws herself into the ocean after being raped by a sea
pirate,
and I am the pirate, my heart not yet capable of seeing and
loving.

I am a member of the politburo, with plenty of power in my
hands,
and I am the man who has to pay his “debt of blood” to, my
people,
dying slowly in a forced labor camp.

My joy is like spring, so warm it makes flowers bloom in all
walks of life.
My pain if like a river of tears, so full it fills the four oceans.

Please call me by my true names,
so I can hear all my cries and laughs at once,
so I can see that my joy and pain are one.

Please call me by my true names,
so I can wake up,
and so the door of my heart can be left open,
the door of compassion.

Thich Nhat Hanh

“Take my hand.
We will walk.
We will only walk.
We will enjoy our walk
without thinking of arriving anywhere.”

“We are all connected. When you touch one thing, you are touching everything. Whatever we do has an effect on others. Therefore, we must learn to live mindfully to touch the peace inside each of us.

Peace in the world starts with peace in oneself. If everyone lives mindfully, everyone will be more healthy, feel more fulfilled in their daily lives and there will be more peace. This collective mindfulness can bring positive change to our families, organizations, communities, nations and future generations.”

~ Thich Nhat Hanh

“To be beautiful means to be yourself.
You don’t need to be accepted by others.
You need to accept yourself.
When you are born a lotus flower,
be a beautiful lotus flower,
don’t try to be a magnolia flower.
If you crave acceptance and recognition
and try to change yourself to fit
what other people want you to be,
you will suffer all your life.
True happiness and true power lie in understanding yourself, accepting yourself, having confidence in yourself.”

“The most precious gift
we can offer others is our presence.
When mindfulness embraces those we love,
they will bloom like flowers.”

The cosmos is filled with precious gems.
I want to offer a handful of them to you this morning.
Each moment you are alive is a gem,
shining through and containing earth and sky,
water and clouds.

It needs you to breathe gently
for the miracles to be displayed.
Suddenly you hear the birds singing,
the pines chanting,
see the flowers blooming,
the blue sky,
the white clouds,
the smile and the marvelous look
of your beloved.

You, the richest person on Earth,
who have been going around begging for a living,
stop being the destitute child.
Come back and claim your heritage.
We should enjoy our happiness
and offer it to everyone.
Cherish this very moment.
Let go of the stream of distress
and embrace life fully in your arms.

“Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything – anger, anxiety, or possessions – we cannot be free.”

“There are no mistakes in Zentangle,
so there is no need for an eraser.
If you do not like the look of
a stroke you have made,
it then becomes only an opportunity
to create a new tangle,
or transform it using an old trusty pattern.
A Zentangle tile is meant to be a surprise
that unfolds before the creator’s eyes,
one stroke at a time.”

Like clouds in the empty sky;
Greed, hatred, and ignorance appear and disappear
Like bubbles on the surface of the sea.”

“Some people live as though they are already dead.
There are people moving around us
who are consumed by their past,
terrified of their future,
and stuck in their anger and jealousy.
They are not alive; they are just walking corpses.”

“Real haiku is the soul of poetry.
Anything that is not actually
present in one’s heart is not haiku.
The moon glows, flowers bloom, insects cry, water flows.
There is no place we cannot find flowers or think of the moon.
This is the essence of haiku.
Go beyond the restrictions of your era,
forget about purpose or meaning,
separate yourself from historical limitations
—there you will find the essence of true art, religion, and science.”

~ Santōka Taneda
